The Challenge

SmithGroup envisioned a highly functional yet architecturally integrated centerpiece for their Los Angeles office library space. The client needed a custom island that would maximize storage and support day-to-day functionality while also complementing the surrounding design language within the 11,000-square-foot workplace. A key architectural feature—a large curved light fixture suspended above the space—created an additional design challenge, requiring the island to visually align with and reinforce the room’s geometry.

Beyond performance requirements, the client wanted the piece to embody an industrial aesthetic without sacrificing refinement or craftsmanship.

The Design Approach

Studio Other collaborated closely with SmithGroup to co-design a one-of-a-kind library island that balanced utility, proportion, and visual impact. The team carefully studied the architectural elements of the space, using the curved overhead lighting feature as a guiding design reference. The resulting island mirrors the light fixture’s soft radius and overall scale, creating a cohesive focal point within the library environment.

To achieve the desired industrial character, the island incorporated rolled hot-rolled steel end panels paired with curved multi-piece laminate tops. The contrast between the raw steel texture and the warm wood edge detailing introduced both durability and warmth, elevating the piece beyond a purely functional storage solution.

The final design delivers seamless integration between architecture and furniture while supporting the client’s need for accessible storage, efficient layout flow, and a strong visual identity.
